Treatment – Laser Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) is advancment over other lasers that have been used in the treatment of open-angle glaucoma for more than two decades. It works by using laser light to stimulate your own healing response to lower your eye pressure. Using a special wavelength and energy, the laser affects only pigmented (melanin containing) cells of your eye. It targets the trabecular meshwork, which works with a miniature sieve to re-circulate the eyes’ internal fluid. Although eye drops are often initiated as a first line treatment, in a number of patients SLT was performed instead of eyedrop therapy. We do not yet know how permanent SLT would be. In a number of patients, after 2 or 3 years the effects of the treatment waned; repeat SLT was then performed to restore its pressure lowering effect.
